Default The world's ugliest bass guitar... and it's all mine!

I currently own a standard Fender American P/J bass, a Musicman Stingray, and a UBass. These basses cover most of my needs. However, I had some old pedals and electronics to trade in and had decided to go to GC and pick up a Squire 40th Anniversary P bass since they are on sale. On a whim, I picked up this Jackson X Concert bass to play around with, mostly in the assumption that I would be horrified by it. It has single coil ACTIVE pickups, a horrendous headstock, and a red color that is painfully orange looking.

However, when I plugged it in I was blown away by the clarity of tone! This thing has power and clarity like I've not felt in a bass guitar before. It was marked down to $350 from $800, so basically the same cost as the Squire. Since I wanted something different for flat picking in my surf music, I decided to bring it home. It cost me nothing out of my pocket since I had some old trade ins. In fact, I made $150 in pocket change!

What a horrendous looking bass! But the tones! Oh man! Surf is up!20230902_224658.jpg20230902_161140.jpg

Schweet! Looks like a Rick 4001 quasi-clone, no?

Most people call is a Jackson-backer. It's actually kind of a cross between a Jackson, a Fender, and a Rickenbacker. A bit of a mash-up?

FYI active pickups don't have the same stigma with bassists as they do with guitarists - in fact, many if not most high-four and five-figure boutique basses have been using them for decades - so if they provide the tone you're after, just remember to keep a couple spare 9V batteries in your case compartment...

Don't know how that finish looks in person, but on my screen it looks kinda like the old Fender Fiesta Red - perfect for surf music...

As far as that '80s headbanger headstock is concerned - let's just say if you've got a hostile audience, need to make a quick exit, and picked up some valuable jousting techniques at this year's Renaissance Fair, you're in good shape...

It looks like something an eight-year-old would design while he’s bored in class. In other words, it looks freaking awesome!

It even sounds like a Rick.

A FireGlo finish X is on sale today for $499.99 at Musician's Friend and Guitar Center.

Jackson has always made guitars that look a little different. To me it looks kind of cool. It does have a bit of a Rickenbacker look.

It was interesting. They had three of these in stock. The white one was most expensive at $599, the Ricky looking sunburst was $499, and my strange orange/red one was only $375. Given that this will be my "surf" bass, I figured the bright orange/red will work just fine for me! If I had my choice and all were the same cost, I probably would have gotten the sunburst one above.

Todd, you're a smart man to have tried to play that bass. Gotta love it when you pick up a guitar/bass that you have very little expectation of and then it follows you home. Congrats!
