Eastman Mandolin
I've had my MD 505 for a couple months now, and I don't think I could have done better for a first mandolin. I can see why they are so popular in the good quality, not too expensive level. The Mandolin Store was great to deal with and their setup was perfect.

You bring up a good point that its not just what you buy but where you buy it. Dennis at The Mandolin Store is legendary for great service. Nothing gets shipped without a proper setup.

Never tried one myself but my friend is a huge fan of the Eastman mandolins, and thinks they're one of the best on the market. I used to own an Eastman acoustic guitar and was very impressed with the quality. As far as I remember the X brace was super tight and they didn't even cover it with a cloth or anything because there was nothing to hide. Whatever they're doing, they're doing it right.
