Default Cargo owners.

Hi, I just took delivery of a CA Cargo rt, I was wondering if anyone is using medium strings instead of lights, what were your thoughts if you tried them,
did you sustain any damage, warping etc..? Thankyou...Neil

I put them on and never took them off. I think I prefer the Cargo with mediums, but honestly it's been so long since I've used lights on the Cargo that I can't remember what they were like.

If nothing else, the mediums will give you a bit more tension and feel less floppy than lights. The neck relief is still perfect with mediums.

I'm using D'Addario EXP17's. I wanted coated strings so I could use the Cargo in any environment without worrying about corrosion. (Like sailing.)

I'm pretty sure the Cargo was designed by Ellis Seal to be used with 12's but using mediums should present no problems. I tried mediums on my Cargo but ended up going back to 12's. You might prefer the sound and feel of the heavier strings though so it's certainly worth a try.

i couldn't stand how floppy lights were on my Cargo. Mediums just seem more appropriate, given the short scale and the small size. I use John Pearse PBs and think they compliment the Cargo really well.

I haven't tried mediums yet on my Cargo, but I do have a set of Martin Light/Medium PB (M-545) on it right now, which are exactly between a light and a medium gauge. I like them quite a bit: not as loose as the light gauge, but not as stiff as I know medium would be. I have mediums on several other guitars, but just don't feel the need on the Cargo.

No change in the action with going to the light/medium gauge.

Medium Elixirs, can't believe I'm saying this but they've been on there 6 months and still sound fine.

I changed from the 11 Nano's to D'Addario EJ-17 PB mediums. Sound great. Last. Since I use mediums on everything, the feel is more consistent, but with the short scale, the tension feels light. The sound is not that different to me. Just less bright than the Nano's.

NO change in relief or action at all!

I've had my Cargo for nearly three years and immediately switched to mediums (Elixer Nano PB). I recently noticed that the action had come up a bit especially above the fifth fret and the neck had more relief then I like. Since the saddle is low (typical of CA's), I switched back to lights except for the high E and B strings, which I left medium.

So far, so good.....
