Default this video clip keeps blowing me away...

i was digging around for flamenco guitar videos, and i stubbled upon this clip by gerardo nunez - sevillanas. the video quality is pretty bad, but his mastery shines through, and the uber panning camera angles are often really cool and revealing. lots of downstrokes with the fingers (which i hear is very beneficial to upstrokes, paradoxically enough). by the end, i'm always a little in awe. that's how you play the guitar!

That is some amazing playing. I can listen to the fastest metal shredder (I grew up on that stuff) and I'm always amazed but then I listed to something like this and I think I'm even more amazed. I love the riff he plays at 1:30 - 1:40.

Flamenco guitarists are the most technically accomplished guitarists
on the planet.

The degree of difficulty puts all other styles to shame.

Gerardo is one of the best.

thanks for commenting again, dru. that part is a bit of a climax - i really like the strum at 1:38, then the build up and syncopation before coming back in at 2:03. those right hand down strokes are so cool!

i'm not familiar with him (although i had to order this cd), but i really like this clip i found. his rhythm is really great, as is his right hand technique. lots of thumb rest strokes, but all free strokes for the i-m-a fingers.

i like his laid-back, but kind of intense (and good postured!) style. and all those camera angles are really helpful. this type of guitar playing really appeals to me. i even like how he greets the camera, once, at the 0:24 mark. i really have watched this over and over.

wow, that was really great!. some thoughts i had while watching it were: his i finger is really very active!; that's a lot of downstrokes!; his (physical) neck is really long!

he used a lot of rest strokes for i and m, and liked to rest his thumb on the 6th string, as well as use it for the higher strings as well.

he was really good, and really played on the finger downstrokes. i didn't care for the tune quite as much, but very nice guitar playing. very "nuevo", like i know what i am typing about. lol.

again, a lot of anchoring with the rh thumb. his posture reminded me of bensusan.
he flails more than someone like garardo, and doesn't have the finese, imo (how could he?). but very fine playing from a youngster. very cool.

here is gerardo's bulerias, lots of a finger as well - he sure can play that thing!:

Interesting. I guess the same could be said of any genre of music and guitar. I know fantastic electric guitar metal players who can't really play acoustic and vice-versa.

I meant technically as in "Physical Technique". Not related to music theory or composition.

i dont know what "Physical Technique" means.

Paco de Lucia played Concierto de Aranjuez...excuse me but there are hundreds of guitarists out there that played it better than him.....and its a Spanish work.

Flamenco guitarists I believe are technically the best right hand (picking hand) guitarists, the abilities, and techniques required for flamenco are very complex and difficult to learn.

(personally, I think for left hand, ie fretting hand, that gypsy jazz guitarists are the most accomplished)
