Default Tell Me about this Harmony guitar

Looking into buying this guitar from a friend. He says it's a 1939/40 Harmony Stella.

Any Harmony experts that can weigh in and tell me about it? Value? Woods? etc.

Here is a link to a Harmony archtop website that may be of help.

Right now it's set up for a slide...action's kinda high for me. I just don't want to buy it for one price and then find out its only worth $50 or something like that. I'm new to arch tops and Harmony guitars. I may need to go play it again...

"Right now it's set up for a slide..."

Because they can't get the action low enough to play it owing to needing the neck reset.

Exactly. If I had a dime for every vintage guitar trying to be sold as a great slide guitar...

Your implication is that it's not a great slide guitar. Is that what you're claiming? Why would that be the case?

I think he's saying simply that many without salvageable action are advertised as set-up for slide. I don' think he was indicating that it 'couldn't' be a good slide -- perhaps it is! Question is, does it play conventionally?

I see...entirely possible. A little more clarity would have made that clearer...thanks for the clarification.

Great looking guitar!

We played around with the guitar. Adjusted the action. It's a pretty decent playing guitar! And the looks are to die for! It's got some mojo for sure.

I believe that is a Supertone model 263. Supertones were made by Harmony and was the Sears house brand before Silvertone (which Sears was already using for radios and such).

I have the flat top version of that guitar - a 1939/40 Supertone 210. Neck is perfect on this one though. Even have the canvas case and song book that originally came with it.

Looks like the f-hole harmony I bought in the 70's for twenty bucks. The action was super high as I didn't know a thing about warped necks but I was happy with it and took it to my first lesson. I got my twenty back when I sold it and upgraded to a Takamine steel-string.
