Default reading in scordatura

Does anyone find reading music difficult when the 5th and 6th strings are both tuned down to D and G respectively?

I have never even tried but I still feel confident in saying that yes, I find this difficult for myself to do.

Well, pieces that are tuned down to D i can read easily now but when A is also tuned to G its difficult .
I arranged a piece with drop D and drop G once and my teacher who is a soloist and sight reads easily didnt even tried it. He said something like : This needs searching.

Wink Practice makes....not perfect, but usually at least better

Find a dozen or more tunes with this tuning and sight read at least some them every day for 3 weeks and then it will probably be easy.

I do not have any claim to virtuosity or genius, but I was able to learn the bass clef by sight reading Bach's third cello suite from the cello score 4 - 6 days a week for about 3 weeks, with the 6th string tuned to C and the 5th string tuned to G.

How old we're you when you learned the alphabet? Not a more difficult task, just takes some time and attention on a regular basis.

I'll just have to do it to get better.

There are plenty of tunes out there for DGDGBE tuning, as well as for CGDGBE tuning, but it can take quite awhile to accumulate many of them, since usually you only find one tune out of about 10 - 20 tune books that have arrangements in either of those turnings.

Here are a few DGDGBE arrangements off the top of my head, sorry I don't remember more:

Sevilla (Albeniz)
En Sueno La Floresta (Barrios) (not sure I spelled the title correctly)
Tall Fiddler (Tommy Emmanuel)
Hilarity Rag (arranged by Stefan Grossman's in his "Ragtime Blues Guitar")
Bluegrass (Don Wilson - this tune was composed for guitar duo)
Maalaala Mo Kaya (Constancio de Guzman)
Just a Closer Walk With Thee (unknown)

Best wishes with it!

Barrios has written several pieces in DGDGBE but the diffiiculty is not reading the score but actualy playing it.

I agree, the more you see pieces with this tuning, the easier it will get. The piece "Tango" by Francisco Tarrega is another you can add to the list!

True , i used to play that one but it is mostly , as i can remember , open strings on D and G bass strings so you don't really learn how to read this tuning IMO.

A nice piece and "easy" to play though.

ps DGDGBE tuning is great gor Tangos!
