Show (and tell me about) your Oak Guitars!
I have looked at some threads on oak guitars but none of the pictures show up because of the photobucket fiasco. So, anyway, I'd sure like to see some pictures of some Oak guitars and hear what you think of them. I am having a guitar built and am seriously considering going with Oak, despite it not really being a popular choice.

I tried once an oak guitar and really did not like it at all (Stevens Guitar from Munich).
Others seem to like the sound... Last edited by rpnfan; 11-19-2017 at 04:43 AM. Reason: wrong thread... |

I played a parlour from Steven Kinnaird that was outstanding, pretty too. It was not for sale, but he was willing to make another (of course he was).

Taylor's Pallet Guitar is the only one that comes to mind. Only 25 were built, but maybe one of the owners could weigh in. Obviously I know nothing about the OP's finances and how long he keeps guitars, but I would personally be very reluctant to specify oak on a custom build due to potential resale challenges down the road...

While I do not own it any longer, I did have a 1930s Schmidt Stella with an oak body. I loved it but then again, this one also had a spruce top as opposed to the more typical all-birch version.

Not completed yet but a tenor sized six string uke out of white oak I harvested from a neighbor's tree. The sides were made of a pair of these, forgot to take a picture of the raw back.
Fretboard is oak also. Need to finish the neck. Just for the heck of it the bridge will be oak also. Should have taken the last picture at a different angle so the rays are more visible.

I built an oak dreadnought with a Sitka top. It has since been sold. It was a great sounding guitar. I sold it to a dealer who raved to me about how good it sounded. If you want pictures to see what a good set of white oak can look like, send me an email at, [email protected] and I'll send you some pictures.

I have a 1920s era Bay State 0-12 Slot-Head that has an X-braced replacement Red Spruce top over the original White Oak back and sides.
This wonderful, old, little guitar has completely squelched my fingerstyle GAS with its loud, clear, clean, fundamental-rich voice. The projection and note articulation are especially noteworthy. Bay-State-0-12-collage.jpg SAM_2053-B.jpg SAM_2056.jpg SAM_2057.jpg SAM_2058.jpg

Here's my hand made Oak Ditson 22 pattern.. This guitar is about 14" across the lower bout. So it would be somewhere round abouts an 00.... Shape is more like a dread though - turns out it's a fairly traditional Northern European pattern... Quite a few Austrian guitars look kinda lumpy like this.
Sound wise - it's great. It has a big and full sound. The best description I can give is "old rosewood".. It has the full bass without the metallic zing. The back and sides are very well quartered - but the curl hides the ray fleck. The neck is also QS oak. Sound and playability is great - it's just a bit heavy.... This is the natural color of the oak. There is no stain on it - which makes it look very blonde. Without a stain - the quartersawn ray fleck also does not "Pop" like it does with a finish like the Brentup guitars shown above. I really like oak a whole lot as a tonewood. |

Here is a white oak, ladder braced, 49.9 scale, J-185 (16") sized guitar I made last year. It has a very mellow and clear sound, but lacks volume, I believe due to the ladder bracing. The neck is also white oak from the Spessart Forest in Germany with 35-40 grain lines per inch - and it turned out lighter in weight than the same size mahogany neck. The back and sides are from a 62" log of Scottish white oak. Top is red spruce. I modeled it after Gibsons from the 30's - the Florentine painted option, and the glitter purfling:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruby16...7649776959267/ I have played one of the Oak guitars built by Martin 5 years ago and it was lovely - more like mahogany. Click to the right, and there is text below each shot Ed |

Fred.
That is a fun little parlor guitar you have going there. Are you planning to do any stains on the oak? I wish I had on my little Ditson above. I love the tone - but plain natural oak is kinda boring on the eyes. |
