If my fading memory is still with me, the Beatles and the whole 60's scene got me interested, but the first song I remember playing was Tom Dooley by the Kingston Trio. I learned a few songs of theirs and it helped me to train my ear. Style for me is basically simple strumming. Love me some Kingston Trio

I have always thought Roy Orbison's style was pretty "cool, calm and collected" and I try to be somewhat like that - otherwise known as "boring".
I like and play a number of his songs.

None of the people I've seen (I might have missed some of the posts) listed in this thread have influenced my acoustic guitar playing. Most of those listed are singers who accompany themselves on guitar. I loved the songs of John Denver, but his playing did not influence me. My guitar playing...acoustic, electric, nylon string, has been influenced largely by Chet Atkins, Doyle Dykes, John Knowles and a couple others living or dead, and by the three wonderful teachers I've been fortunate to have in my life. To me it's not about playing acoustic guitar, but about playing guitar.

I never wanted to play without singing, and much of what stretched me as I learned to play guitar came from the super-cool intros on songs like these:
- Scarborough Fair
- Here Comes the Sun
- Rocky Mountain High
- (Man of Constant Sorrow) Dan Tyminski version
- Glass Hotel

As for Jimmy Reed, the simplicity of his blues guitar style is just plain perfect and a huge, huge influence:

I have to say there are many but the most influential would have to be,

Van Morrison
Bob Dylan
Gordon Lightfoot
Glenn McCollum (my next door neighbor many moons ago Thanks Glenn!!)

Enjoying reading all the answers.

The first one that comes to my mind is Steve Goodman, although no one, including me, can play the way he did. So for flatpicking, that's him.

For fingerstyle, I'd put Mississippi John Hurt, then maybe Prine.

Neil Young inspired me to pick up the guitar back in 1976 and Gordon Lightfoot was another source of inspiration back then. To this day, they are still my greatest influences. Dan Fogelberg and Paul Simon have also influenced my playing.

Off the top of my head:

Peter Townshend
George Harrison
Roddy Frame
Jonathan Edwards
James Taylor
Stephen Bishop
Everly Brothers
Paul Weller
John Spillane
Christy Moore
America
Neil Finn
John Denver
Eric Carmen/Raspberries
XTC
Very early Everything But Girl
Nick Heyward
Older Billy Bragg
Orleans
Thin Lizzy

I can't say I play like some of these artists listed. But they've all influenced me, in myriad ways. They all push my songwriting style. My vocal arrangements sometimes seem very much influenced by the melodic style of Phil Lynott. I guess my playing style is more towards Townshend and the Everly Brothers, with a bit of Frame, Finn and Bishop - or so I try! I play only acoustic these days...

Originally Jerry Garcia. Was a Dead Head and wanted to be able to strum and sing along with most of their songs. Figured I could attract the girls a lot easier with a guitar in my hands.

It worked.

Now that I'm older it can camouflage my pot belly.

Doesn't work so well...

Well, let's see. I can remember the first few albums I owned:
Creedence Cosmo's Factory
James Gang Rides Again and Thirds - Joe Walsh always worked with acoustic and had at least one acoustic song.
Doobie Brothers Toulouse Street and The Captain and Me - Pat Simmonds fingerpicked some really nice stuff.
John Denver Farewell Andromeda and Rocky Mountain High - Well, what kind of guitar do you expect here?
Allman Brothers Beginnings and Eat a Peach

As you can see, most of my guitar influence, including John Denver's, was guitar in a group context.

Before my first albums there was a half-decade of radio feeding into my head.
