The Crown was excellent. Can't wait for the next season. ...and how John Lithgow didn't win the other night for his portrayal of Winston Churchill still baffles me. He is amazing in this role.

Same here. "Versailles" looked like cheap trash with high school quality acting. "The Crown", however, is excellent and gets better as it goes along.

After watching a few more episodes of Versailles, I do think much of the initial sensationalism gets moderated and the story develops --- still slowly --- but enjoyably.

Put this together with "amateurish acting and dialogue," and we have some extremely negative language to describe a series, which, while it may not have suited everyone, was clearly a very professional production and well acted. This suggests to me that there may be something about the series that offends some people in some way. I'm at a loss as to what that may be.

I, too, thought John Lithgow did a really good job playing Winston Churchill. Of course, I never knew the fellow... But I have read a huge amount about Mr. Churchill. And John Lithgow's acting was very consistent with my understanding of Mr. Churchill's personality.

Claire Foy was excellent, also.

I thought "The Crown" was really a first class production and held our attention every moment.

We just finished episode 10, which concludes season 1 of Versailles. We liked it very much. It was interesting and beautiful in its own way. As the story got more established there was much less gore and more intrigue --- and the story became more interesting. It will be interesting to see if there is a season 2.

As I mentioned before, my wife and I liked it a lot. I think you get a real sense of what the atmosphere of the place and the mentality of the people might have been like. Plus, as you say, the plot is very well managed. We really hope a second season does appear.

Paul, I see you mentioned 'Broadchurch' earlier in this thread.
I just noticed today that a 3rd and final series is showing here next week.

My wife and I enjoyed "The Crown," but we couldn't figure out why the first couple of episodes kept showing Prince Philip's fanny. Didn't really add to the story. But I suppose they can't help themselves with these things....

Prince Philip's "fanny"? What on earth are you talking about?

Heads up on SS GB.
One of those if the Germans won the war dramas. Only seen the first episode so far. Set in '41 story follows a British Detective investigating a murder. Looks promising. Based on the Len Deighton novel which I haven't read.

Like a few have already said, my wife and I liked the Crown very much but gave up on Versailles quickly. Not for us-a, bit too earthy...

Yes it very well may be historically accurate but that doesn't mean I want to watch it for entertainment.

Best,
PJ
