NGD 7 months ago
Back in December 2016 I was in Brisbane and stopped by a small guitar shop in Red Hill. I wanted to try out guitars made of all-native-Australian wood and got to play a couple of Cole Clarks and a Maton. I wasn't planning on buying anything . . .
The one I fell in love with was this pre-owned Cole Clark Angel2, all solid Tasmanian blackwood with the standard Cole Clark Queensland maple neck and redwood fretboard. I love the sound and how it plays. I've read opinions that Cole Clarks only sound good when amplified, but I almost always play unamplified and I love what it does that way. It's really different when finger-picked and with flat-picked; the flat pick brings out the brilliance, the finger-picking makes it intimate. At least that's my perception. I've included photos of the interior as well, to show what the Spanish Heel neck inset looks like and the unusual bracing pattern and carved-out back. (Chalk up my delay in getting these posted to my ineptness with photobucket.)

I just saw the John Sebastian/Martin Guitars feature from CBS Sunday Morning about 3 years ago and Sebastian plays his 00 or 000 size Hawaiian koa Martin. It sounded to me surprisingly like my Cole Clark. Because Cole Clark's Angel2 series increases the depth of the standard 000 size to 4-1/4", making it more similar to a dread in that respect, this guitar has a bit more low end than my Martin. The unusually large tone-hole makes for a louder sound. The inset Spanish heel neck seems to help the entire guitar vibrate when I play, similar to how my Martin feels, and the neck and fretboard are nice and slick, making it easy to play. I'd describe the sound as clear, crisp but not overly bright, with a balanced tonal spectrum from top to bottom and without some of the mid-range punch that my Martin mahogany 000 has.

Yeah, it took me awhile to figure out how to get photos into my posts. I'm slow that way.
