How to get gear cart up stairs? Ideas?
Wondering if any of you guys have run into this before? Just picked up a new gig at the restaurant/bar with the absolute best sunset view on our island. Problem is, it atop these 3 flights of stairs with no elevator or automatic lift and I have to get my gear up there each gig. I normally roll my gear in on a cart, but obviously I'll be carrying it up until I can find a better solution. I'm charging them a setup premium just because of this obstacle. Any suggestions?

Looks to be a pretty small performance space. If you're a solo act I'd pare down to a small amount of stuff that I could carry using two hands and a single trip.

I've used hand trucks with a rolling rubber tread on the back like a tank tread that allows you to slide them up the stair face:
Available HERE or at your hardware store for $129. Invest in long bungees. Bob

This is what you need. There are lots of variants on the market, including heavy duty motorized industrial types.

Right now it's a 3-ascend/descend trip to setup, and 3 to tear down:
1: Instruments by themselves so I don't risk tripping and breaking them 2: PA (HK Elements, line array similar to size of Bose L1) 3: Mic & guitar stand, pedalboard This means I'll have to cross over the stairs at least 12 times a gig. Thank goodness there's a little extra money in it.

I take it you're not in the USA? ADA means accessibility for the disabled is required.

Well, that is why you are getting extra money. Take the money, and pay a local teenager $20 or so to carry your equipment up every time you're playing there. The last thing I would want to do is carry my equipment up
in your heat and humidity before playing. |

We get paid to take it out of the house, set it up in your place, tear it down, and take it back home and put it away. The playing part is free.
Give somebody a few bucks and lunch to help you set up and tear down. rct |

Ummm...ya know a Guam is a US territory? But yeah, that's the first question I asked when I played my first wedding gig there. Apparently, for any disabled customers, they bring a table and chairs down the stairs to the edge railing right in between the trees in the picture. My mom has been legally disabled after a drunk driver hit us in a car accident in 1986 and broke her leg - so I know firsthand the challenges disabled persons face. The restaurant management team just took over the place this year, they weren't part of the design team. I'm just trying to make the best of it because the view is amazing!

Use an L1C, a gig bag for your guitar, small wire bag and one mic stand. Possibly one trip.

If they're running a bar/restaurant up there, they are moving alot more and heavier stuff than your rig every day, so they must have staff who could help with that - I'd just ask for a little help (at least for the upstairs part) -

I feel your pain. Load in and load out are the biggest reason that I stopped gigging a couple of years ago. My aging knees, plus tearing up your hands hauling heavy gear just before needing them at their best to perform.
I like the idea of paying a teen a few bucks to haul your gear for you, once they are instructed to be properly careful with it. If not, at least you won't have to go to the gym on days when you gig there. Maybe check with a U-Haul place or home improvement store and see if there is a stair-climbing hand truck like the one that Bob Womack showed. Otherwise I would just pare down to the absolute minimum. I use a Roland AC60 when there is AC power and an AC33 when there isn't. |
