What's your Favorite Jazzy Rock, Pop, Folk, Acoustic Tune?
I'm looking to do a different act with an Acoustic Band doing Up-Tempo tunes that border Jazzy but are well known Rock, Pop type tunes or have been done up in a Jazzy arrangement. And Yes, mostly with Vocals but also extended jams on most tunes. Yes I'd probably include a few by Steely Dan, Sting etc. Current or Classic tunes.
Here are a few examples: I'm Yours ----------------------- Jason Mraz In The Name Of Love ---------- Kenny Rankin Have A Good Time ------------- Paul Simon Your Secret's Safe With Me --- Michael Franks Incandescent Blue ------------- Bruce Cockburn I'll Be Around ------------------ The Spinners Maybe a few popular instrumentals like The Allman's "In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed" or a vocal tune with jams like "Black Magic Woman". I'm building my home studio now but will soon be looking to piece together, Percussion, Keys, Bass, me on Guitar/Vocals, and 1 more piece. Could be Violin, Mandolin, Obo, etc. and hopefully someone else that likes to sing, harmonize and share the lead vocals. OK, you get the drift……...So, what is your favorite Jazzy influenced Rock, Pop, Folk, Acoustic tune or favorite Jazzy rendition of a someone's hit record? |

Ok, I'll bite. I may be totally off with what you want here but I really like Beginnings by Chicago. Has a great guitar intro too...believe it's a 12 string. George Benson's Masquerade or On Broadway are awesome too...but these tunes may be too old for you

I wish I was too old to know those tunes. LOL All good tunes BTW.
Benson's Breezin' Album was so well recorded that a lot of audio stores used it as a demo on TT's because it made even cheap stereo systems sound good. I still have it on vinyl. Benson's "The Other Side Of Abbey Road" is really worth a listen. He does a really nice version of "I Want You"…His voice is great and the Jazz rendition is very cool. |

For some reason "Living in the Past" by Jethro Tull popped into my mind. Must be the 5/4...

I only know one of those on your list. A couple "jazzy" upbeat songs that are well known Locked Out Of Heaven by Bruno Mars Brandy by Looking Glass (covered by The Red Hot Chili Peppers) Little Talks by Of Monsters And Men (super simple and has 100M views)

Thanks for the suggestions ! Keep 'em coming.
I forgot about Tull. I used to do "Teacher" years ago. Living In The Past is another good one. I used to play with a guy back in 1980 who played flute. Did Tull to the "T"! He also ran a Barcus Berry pickup from the flute to an original Mini-Moog. The flute has no or limited harmonics so it worked great. He could literally "Dial In" Macca's synth part to Band on the Run etc…etc… Nice Bass part on the Chili Peppers. Santana is always a good choice. The Mars tune…very Sting sounding. Little Talks…a bit of a stretch but thanks for the suggestion because new ideas are always welcome. |

There's Mustang Sally...Mojo & the Boogieman do a great version. Hall and Oates do a great version of I'll Be Around. Good Lovin' by the Young Rascals. I also like We'll be Together by Sting.

This style of music was all throughout Quebec folk rock from the 70s. Harmonium, Cano, others come to mind. Did not catch on in Anglophone Canada. They were too busy listening to Ann Murray.
Steely Dan is a must. Do it Again, Deacon Blues... |

You guys have an odd idea of jazz.
I like "stomping at the savoy," which is great for solo guitar because it's got a lot of call and response type stuff and is easy to Improvise over. Or the bobby Timmons song "moanin," a gospel blue with a cool turnaround. The George benson tune bossa rocka is fun to play. I have a 3/4 arrangements of "gravy waltz" that I do a lot. There, I have all the solo jazz cliches covered. A swing tune, a blues, a bossa, and a jazz waltz! As warmed up as I'm gonna get |

You mentioned "Elizabeth Reed." This is The Allman Brothers doing it acoustic from their 'An Evening With the Allman Brothers 2nd Set" live album.
Lots of good "Jazzy" Van Morrison. The bass line on Wild Nights is awesome. Sultans of Swing by Dire Straits swings. None of these are jazz tunes, but that have that feel to listeners who are not jazz fans. |

our trio does an instrumental jazz / rock version of "things we said today" (Beatles), one of our favorites to perform.
Also arranging our version of "along the watchtower" (hendrix)... hope it won't make him turn in his grave, but we like it and "what a wonderful world" with a couple of minor chord changes we get a very cool jazz ballad |
