I did have a friend let me play his '41 during a set I did at a Martin gathering a few years ago. That was very nice! As it came from the factory: A week or less later: (I don't like labels in D-28's, either!) |

Great looking guitar either way, Dave!

Thanks!
And I can see how you'd like the ebony pins on that dark sunburst. They do go well with it. |

That's not just a burst D28 - that's a Marquis! I have one as well, and definitely prefer the ivory pins on my guitar.
That pepperoni guard is tough to look at (mine had one originally as well). Purely on appearance, I think both sorts of pins would look better with a nicer pick guard. I had one myself and was pleased with the new one. My Marquis has a "Vintage" or "37" burst, but you can see how the pick guard can improve the look. It's a Martin Delmar pick guard. I'd love to remove the label in my Marquis and asked my luthier to do so. Unfortunately, he said it would not come out without a fight, so I've let it be. |

Great looking burst on your Marquis schwa! I like that Delmar too. I am looking forward to ditching the pixelated pepperoni on mine.
Man, you guys are about to sell me on the ivory pins.

Bob Colossi's red-eye ivory pins are hard to beat!

I managed to break one of my ivory-with-black-dot pins on my D 28 (175th. Anniversary model, aged toner Adi top, interior label removed !!).
I changed them all for some polished ebony ones I had. They just look wrong. I am gonna have to change them back. I do like Dave's red-eyes, they'd kinda match my own too ! |

I feel that this matter should be resolved in terms of desired sound first. Theoretically, ivory pins should enhance overtones or the high end of your guitar, while ebony pins should enhance undertones, yielding a more pronounced bass. If you don't hear any difference, then it's a matter of appearance... and my opinion, in that case, should be less important than yours.

Thanks! I thought that closeup captured some of the grain in Bob's ivory pins nicely.
