Default 814ce String Guage

What does the company reccommend you use on an 814, and what are people using?

The factory spec for all standard x14 models is light gauge, .012-.053. That's what I'm using on my 714, though the low E string on the DR Rare set is .001 bigger.

I'm not. They say it's OK to use them, but that the X12's and X14's are "optimized" to get the best tone from light gauge strings.

I hated the Elixir Nano Lights that came on my 814c. I wanted more bass and tried various sets of strings. I ended-up settling on Elixir Poly Med/Lights and I've been using them for over a year now. I like them a lot. Required a slight truss rod adjustment which I easily did myself.

I bought my 814ce SLIGHTLY used from a collector who found a brazillian rosewood that he thought better fit his collection.

At any rate, when I bought the guitar for him, he had D'Addario mediums on. I played it for about all of 20 minutes before I switched to lights. Recently I've considered switching back, mainly because my pick attack is somewhat aggressive. I'm wondering if a switch to the mediums will help to compensate for my style.

I have drawn back a bit off of the strings because my Taylor sounds better when you're not going at it so hard (unlike my Martins).

Now I'm just rambling. . .
