I am right there with you HHP! My Monterey is clearly not a great mandolin, but it has that old-timey, honky tonk, "Low Fi" voice that works with the stuff I play.

Best advice in the entire thread IMHO. I started with The Loar VS220. After 6 months I had the opportunity to snag a used Collings MT2. And I couldn't understand the price difference at all for many more months. I almost sold it, but fortunately I didn't and I totally get it now. Part of the problem is that the newbie tends to treat it like a small guitar, and you can get out of the blocks fast with that mentality. But you won't make it to the next level that way. The mandolin requires rethinking picking technique quite a bit. And it takes a while to realize that. At least it did with me.

One night she said, how come you don't have a mandolin?

I said, just haven't got around to it.

She said, I think they're pretty.

I said, there are a couple at the shop I've looked at. Both are great deals.

She said, pick one and we'll make it Christmas gift.

I said, I love you.

It has to stay in the case until Christmas morning.

One night I said, "why don't you have an old Gibson?"

I said, " Don't know, just haven't found one yet"

So I said, "Elderly has a bunch of them"

Then I said, "OK, I'll get one"

I replied, "And play the crap out of as soon as it gets here"
