Default Friend of the Devil

If I didn't know the Grateful Dead wrote and performed this, I would've thought it was a bluegrass song written by these two talented guys.

I saw these two fellows a few months ago when they opened for Tommy Emmanuel and it was fantastic! That Rob Ickes on National Steel slide is on just about every record coming out of Nashville these days, he's in high demand and I can see why.

There is a good cover of this by Lyle Lovett recorded at Red Rocks outside of Denver. Great song!

Jerry Garcia played banjo in a jug band long before he joined the Dead. Check out Muleskinner and Old and in the Way.

Great song performed by very talented musicians but like I tell my bluegrass friends it is possible to play a song (at least some songs) too fast, and these guys do it to this one.

As has been noted Garcia had deep "roots" in roots music. Check out some of his work with David Grisman.

Those guys are very talented, but I think that song needs to groove a bit more, not sure it works for me as a Bluegrass song... This is probably my favorite cover of it

Trey is a local boy and an amazing picker that has just exploded in the past year. Got a Grammy nomination too. Very nice guy he helped me out by sending a video for the Cashstrong project. His background is bluegrass but he really loves all kinds of music. Marty Stewart brought him on the Grand Ol Opry when he was 9 years old and had him trading licks with Lester Flatt. He did a lot more than hold his own too. The Grateful Dead channel on XM has picked up Trey and Rob's cover of Friend of the Devil and are playing it in regular rotation. They definitely deserve a closer listen.
