Thanks Brother! And yes, this is getting pretty "serious" in my book too. Good golly, the wood captured me at my very first encounter, but as John adds the details, I'm getting even more and more drawn into the whole thing .
Here is the top getting in place:

Love that last pic. Really shows off the patterns and colors, love the pattern of the B&W ebony that is in the cutout! This is really starting to work, the rosette looks perfect with the back and sides....great.

Getting the binding and purfling in place. We went with radial purfling around the perimeter, and will have some red lines around the guitar body. The Black and white will finish out looking more of a maple tone, and this red should pop nicely to add some color all around.
Here ya go:

This is really looking sweet.
The red radial purfling ties in so well with the rosette. It's really gonna be extra special!!!

Good call on that red purfling. The soundport would look nice bound with the same pattern.

You are probably right about the soundport, but philosophically I am a little against binding soundports at all. I dont see them as a decorative feature. If they didnt sound so good I wouldn't use them. As a sort of necessary evil, I want them to disappear into the background and the grain pattern of this guitar is such that that wont be hard to do. That said, I have bound them in the past and liked what I saw. How do you spell ambivalent? (Wait my spell checker knows)

Sound port binding...
I asked for the ports on my two JK customs to be bound and John graciously gave in. Thanks John! They are super pretty. And they play even better, and they sound ASTOUNDINGLY WONDERFUL!!!
This one really may not need it! The wood is so beautiful by itself... Way to go Mike! And John!!! My goodness this is a beauty Cheers Paul

Thanks again Dennis. I think John may have thought I was nuts when I suggested the red. There are a lot of ways you can do a guitar, and I just thought that despite how cool the black and white was, it would be even cooler (for me) with some "pop" factor. I really like how this is looking also...keeping that delicate balance in place of "just enough but not too much"

Bottom line, he has built so many great looking guitars that I've learned to trust his judgement on most things and I've found that my trust has been well placed. and yes, in the tonal category, he gets it right in spades...where it counts the most

Hey brother, forgive me if you've answered this, but let me ask what did you use for the red radial purfling? And how about a closer view?
Thanks, Steve |

I just used the same wood as the regular purfling only sliced cross section of course. I'll put up a closer view soon. There was not a great deal of variation but some and probably enough. Its .047 thick which was a trial to cut.
