Indian Hill OO-13 for Woodstock
Greetings! It's been a while since I've posted a build thread on here but seeing as I just got added to the roster for Woodstock I thought I'd share one of the guitars I'll be bringing with me this October. I've been developing a flat-top model with f-holes over the past couple of years and it's hard to express just how much I love these guitars both aesthetically and sonically. The original motivation was born out of a deep love of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings and an attempt to meld their two guitar sounds into one.
The guitar is already well on its way so I don't have too many progress pics from the early parts of the process but here we go! Beautiful Sitka spruce top and I'm getting a very strong Darth Vader vibe from this bracing pattern... Cocobolo binding and end graft... This guitar is the first time I've messed around with color and it was quite fun experimenting with various mixes of dyes. The back and sides (maple) have a solid color while the top is a subtle hand rubbed sunburst for a vintage-y feel (how could I not with f-holes?!). Since it was my first attempt, coloring the top was a wee bit stressful at the start but I'm beyond happy with the results so far! Thanks for looking and more to come! Mike |

Looking great! Can't wait to give this one a try at the show. Will you have any others with you?

Very interesting design. How do you plan on attaching your m&t neck with no sound hole or access port?

Thanks everyone! I did some more messing around yesterday with the hand-rubbed burst -- a bit more red and bit darker around the perimeter. I think I've just about got it!

I love this design Mike ... and especially love the colour work ... not for the faint of heart, but worth it!

Beautiful- wow. Great finish work, Mike. Is she getting a trapeze or traditional bridge?

Thanks J.R.! This one will have my standard pinless bridge but one of these days I'll have a go at building with a floating bridge for sure!

Well, it was a long few weeks messing around with coloring the top and I finally settled on a look...
This has much more of a stained versus sprayed look with the grain clearly evident and not hiding under a floating layer of color. I've always loved a western aesthetic and this has the worn-in, dusty, and smokey look I was hoping for. When I finally settled on this, it brought back happy memories of my first solo woodworking project -- a wood burned and stained "Saloon" sign that I made and hung over my door as a 10 year old (though sadly my parents wouldn't let me install batwing doors as well). The French polish is just about done on the body now... And with finishing nearly done I can get back to actual woodworking! Getting the head veneers glued on... Lots more coming up soon! Hoping to get it strung up by the end of next week... |

Wow, the way you've shaded that top is pretty much my ideal! Most bursts don't look remotely natural to me (though I still like many of them), but this is beautifully organic looking - like a steak instead of a protein shake.
