Default Hickory

I was splitting some hickory limbs for firewood yesterday and noticed what a potentially pretty guitar set of back and sides it could have made. There is dramatic coloration and obvuous curl (which makes it hard to split) and in my minds eye im seeing a waterfall hickory back and sides. There is an 8 foot segment of trunk that could have useful guitar wood inside. Its just sooo heavy and hard it will be a challenge.

Hi John, I say go for it! I would love to see the end result and I am sure the guitar would sound wonderful.

It's definitely a rough wood to work with! Especially with burls. Tearout is a pain, so make sure all blades are exceptionally sharp. It's harder than hard maple. It's exceptionally durable, though. Would probably make a great carved archtop, and probably great for braces as well.

Oh, and my experience stems from general woodworking, NOT from guitar making!

Hi John,
I too used Hickory in the construction of my home in 2002. Some bookmatched veneers and some solids in my doors and trim. The doors especially were very pretty and full of color, pinks, tans, browns and light sap wood. Unfortunately those colors faded and left me with a sort of amber/tan. I think my doors were finished with a uv inhibiting catalized laquer, but it didn't seem to work. I guess if you stain the wood this may not be an issue?

Hickory is also a fantastic go-bar deck rod material. Consider harvesting some for that as well...

Smile Your yard!!!

What a beautiful variety of woods from your yard!

I am really fond of the spalted yard maple, as you know!!!

This hickory sounds difficult to work with, but I figure you will sus it out…

Have fun, John

Paul

Go for it John. I’ve built several Hickory guitars and they sounded great. Hickory has some large pores to deal with but not impossible.

You guys have inspired me. I’m going to dedicate a 4 foot section of the log to guitar sets. Somehow to process it.

Good for a Keith Richards build. You never know when Keef will need to use his instrument to assault fans invading the stage.

Hickory makes good drumsticks, too.
