A-mac asked:
Quote:
As it happened, my wife-to-be heard me play before we met in person: I was giving a concert sponsored by the Valdez Arts Council in Valdez, Alaska, and she was a member of the arts council there at that time. She came up and introduced herself to me during the intermission. We didn't meet again for another six months, but when I was re-introduced to her I thought: "This one's worth marrying..." It took more than the instant it took me for her to come around to the idea, but eventually she did. We'll be married 30 years in May. But rather than have this post be yet another paean to the joys of married life, I did, in fact, play music for lots of other women back in my bachelor days, too. The women generally seemed to like the idea.... Wade Hampton Miller |

Of course!!
On my first date, over nine years ago, with my Darlin' I played her a few songs off my CD in the car, then took the guitar out of the trunk & played some more live... just to let her know what she was in for! Little did I know, but soon found out how wonderfully talented a singer she was. We've had our little band for a number of years now. P.S. Like Wade, and in the sense of full disclosure - she was not the first girl I sang to on a date. (just the last one!) Beargrass Creek |

I met my wife when we were both 18 years old (1966) and we were both performing at a coffee house at Purdue U. Then after that I sat next to her for 7 hours each way on a long bus ride home for the Thanksgiving break where we lived in different suburbs of Cleveland. When we got back to school I was asked to do a couple of long performances at what was then called "Coffee & Confusion," a coffee house thing at the Purdue Memorial Student Union. So I took the opportunity to ask my future wife to go with me. Then I wrote a new song for her that I performed there with her in the audience.
Trouble is, the song was so new that I forgot the words in the middle of the song. I felt like a complete idiot, but fortunately my future wife was sympathetic and appreciated that I was willing to stick my neck out for her. We got married in 1970, so we have now been married a little more than 43 years. I did sing for other girls over the years, but this turned out to be the most important one. - Glenn

No Barry White???
Yes, I've done it. Although I think it was a second "real" date. Things have gone very well since.

This always comes to mind when I think of this "playing for your girl thing".

Well, not on a first date, but, at some point it would come up, seeing as I rarely go without either playing, singing, or talking about playing and singing, for any length of time.
Actually, though, I met my present love over a mutual hobby of playing online games. Turned out she liked my music, too, so, yeah, that's a good thing. My late wife was there when I first started learning the guitar. In fact, she bought me my first one...I can't imagine even being around a woman who wasn't into music, anyway, though. I am a bit confused, though, A-Mac...why do you think it was stupid to play for your wife on the first date? Seems it worked out pretty good, or didn't it?

Yeah, standard ploy. Maybe it worked too well, because it got me two wives, not at the same time, but the same tune - Tom Paxton's "Last thing on my mind".

Absolutely. Got me a few girls over the years. However, my wife was the one who was unimpressed...she wasn't gonna fall for some slick tune...
One of the many reasons why she's a keeper. |

Anyone ever play for a girl on a date?
For me, the playing was usually before the date. On the date, there were "other" more important things to do!

Hi A-Mac,
Does it count that my wife met me when I was trying out a guitar in a local guitar shop? That's not quite a date, I know. She was coming in to look for a tambourine; I was playing Tom Paxton's "Last thing on my mind." She started singing it--she was singing in a group at the time. That was a long time ago. And, with Dave and Wade, in the spirit of full disclosure, I will state that Yvonne was not the first woman for whom I played with whom I became romantically involved. Just the last one.
