I should have mentioned earlier Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Just how much of my fascination with it is due to the presence of Bob Dylan (as a character and in the soundtrack) I wouldn't like to have to say. But whatever the reason, it's one that I keep on watching.

Utterly beyond bizarre that that Coen Brothers contemptible desecration of one of the great Westerns of all time--the original "True Grit" with John Wayne, of course--could be considered by anybody as even a mediocre film in any genre.

Which was truer to the original book?

"Silverado" is the one I find myself re-watching most often. "Pale Rider" is my second choice. "Unforgiven" only for the very last scene.

Recently watched The Oxbow Incident.

A great commentary on why you should not take the law into your own hands!

Inyo - I'm afraid you're in the minority. The remake of True Grit was much better than the original. Bridges is a much better actor than Wayne was, and the same for Haylee Steinfeld and Kim Darby.

I'll also add The Missing with Cate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones. Both are among the finest actors of this generation.

Irrelevant. You can make a good film from a mediocre novel or a bad film from a great novel. The original source material doesn't really matter.

And the original movie would have been the latter.

Personally I'll take Jeff Bridges over John (I play the same character in every movie) Wayne any day. Or maybe I just find westerns in general to be too formulaic for my tastes and like when they get turned over a bit.

Neither is a great film to my eye, but I did enjoy the remake more.

All my real favorites have already been named...Outlaw Josie Wales, Unforgiven, The Shootist, Jerimiah Johnson...but I have to give a shout-out to one of my other favorites, Rustler's Rhapsody. Not as clever as Blazing Saddles, but pretty funny just the same.
