Question Low E sound played at 12th fret?

On my Taylor 816ce my action is fine and I get no buzz anywhere on fretboard so action is perfect. However, when I play my low E string at 12th fret (not a harmonic) I get a short thumping tone rather than a sustaining ringing tone as on other frets. It's like other string harmonics and/or body resonance are cancelling it out. I have changed strings multiple times and it remains. I also get this same phenomenon on my D string at 3rd fret and a little at 2nd fret but not as bad. Anyone have any ideas?

I am going to swap between the stock Tusq and Taylor Wavecomp bone saddle I have for it and see if saddle makes a difference, then, if that doesn't change it I will try 80/20 strings. Will let you know the outcome. Would like to hear from other 816ce owners if this is common due to GS body size and tone woods used.

Ok, switched back to Tusq saddle and no change in particular string/fret combination. Going to try a set of 80/20's now. Anybody have any ideas?

mine is totally stock and while the E at the 12th does not ring quite as good as lower frets( which is common) it still has decent sustain.the D string isa fine. I have had some wood instuments do that at specific frets. can by construction etc. one of the only guitars I had where pretty muc every note was clear and sustained with out any choking anywhere was the Carbon fiber one I had.

how long have you owned the guitar and how much do you play. I had an 814CE that I had a few notes especially on the ow E actually sound muted. Around the 9th fret. Well took it in to the shop and the teck did a light fret level and WALLA it played up and down better than it had EVER palyed even new.

forgot to mention I only had my 814CE a year and did a light fret level on it. Like I said only like 2 notes espcially the 9th fret low E sounded like it was muted some. the teck looked down the neck and saw the high fret. ( I could NOT see it LOL) well he did a light fret level and that thing played better than new!

PS

oh ya make sure you check all the nuts at the tuning pegs. I find that many guitars come a tad loose. I had already had to tighten up the ones on my 816CE a bit. fairly vital that even the tuning machines are anchored SOLID to keep away from unwanted stray frequencies or dead notes.

When I was testing out an 816ce I noticed the D string at the third fret did exactly what you said and made a comment to the guy working the store and he couldn't tell any difference. My 416ce ltd doesn't have any of those problems. If I try another 816 I'll see if there are similar problems. I wonder if it could be a characteristic of CV bracing on some guitars?

The dead notes may be caused by wolf tones . There was a thread about it not too long ago. I'll see if I can find it.

Yeah, I made sure the tuner pegs were tight. I just strung it with D'dario EXP 80/20's and although wound strings are brighter the same thump-tone is still on the low E at 12th fret. I am going to put my last set of Elixr PB's back on it and will be vacationing in Pigeon Forge, TN this coming weekend and I will stop by Smoky Mountain Guitar in Pigeon Forge to let them look at it to see if they can give any ideas and also look at their nice inventory.

I am pretty new to this so "wolf tones" is new but I will take a look around and see what I can find concerning it as well.

It might be a shot in the dark, but take your battery out and see if things improve. I had a problem once with some strange buzzing tones, really drove me nuts. I've found that some batteries in the black holders vibrated at certain frequencies. I wrap my batteries with a little tape to make sure they don't rattle when I play. I make sure they have a snug fit in the compartment.
