Taylor 150e
If I’m correct, the 150e (12) has solid spruce tops and have had layered sapele b&s. More recently, they are being made with layered walnut b&s. Are there other top/b&s combos I’m unaware of?
With the GS Mini, it seems that the all hog version is the preferred wood combo. I’d appreciate any thoughts on the which combos are regarded as best for the 150e. Perhaps there isn’t much noticeable difference. Sweetwater advertises the walnut model for $799. Anyone aware of where the best deals are? I have been watching the AGF Classifieds for deals on used ones. Thanks!

As far as I know Sapele and Walnut are the only back and side woods. I bought my Walnut 150e for $700 out the door from my local shop so I'm sure you can do better than $799. Great 12 String. Forum sponsor Alamo music has one listed on reverb for $675.

Howdy,
I just traded my older 110e for a 2017 150e walnut laminate guitar. It is an awesome guitar. Yes, it has a solid sitka spruce soundboard and walnut laminate back/sides (interestingly enough, the inside of mine is sapele laminate). Older model years were solid sitka spruce and sapele laminate. I've never seen other configurations using different soundboards or laminates. Keep your eyes on the classifieds here, UTGF, and on Ebay (from a reputable dealer).

I would recommend looking for a pre-owned Taylor 12 string as there are always many available and a much better value than the 150 series. The 1 and 2 series Taylors have laminate sides and backs. The 3 series and up are all wood construction. There are at least seven 12 string Taylors currently available on Craigslist in my area - I'm sure you can find the same availability where you live.

Hey Tom, I'd like to try out the layered walnut 150e. I wonder why Taylor went with walnut? They must have got their hands on some walnut and have pieces available for laminate.

From my perspective, it appears Taylor is using laminated sapele for the Academy series so they changed the look of the 100 series to walnut to distinguish it.

That makes sense. So it's all the 100 series that went to walnut?

Yes, I belive the entire 100 series starting in 2017 is walnut.

I'm curious about 12 strings as well. A few months ago I played the Taylor 150e and was impressed with how well it played.
I do agree with some other posts I've read that the bottom end is a bit weak but I don't know if that could be partially corrected with a change of strings. I have a gift card from MF so I'm looking into getting a 12 string in the Taylor 150e price range. Even better if one is on sale. What else have people tried/recommended in that range? Thanks |
