Mine is a 2017 and I love it. It has become my #1 for all around playing.
I've played 5, I think, J-15's at this point and all have been great. It seems to be a pretty consistent model, and very versatile.
I'm confident you will be pleased. Congrats!
I hope it is a 2018, would love the strap button

I A/B 'ed a J15 and J45 at a local Guitar Center. Both had the same condition/brand of strings. The J15 sounded much "warmer" for lack of a better word. YMMV.

It only takes about 10 minutes to install a strap button. If you don't want to do it, take it to the shop they'll be finished before you can pick out another guitar to try.

I thought the J45 had a much stronger low end?

I may be wrong but I think I read on the gibson forum the 415 is a bit shallower. It's been a long time but I kind of remember that.

Also, I have a 2017 Sunburst J15 and it is an amazing instrument! I don't play that far up the neck so a lack of cutaway doesn't bother me. I had the shop I bought her from install the second strap button since I'm not about to take a drill to my dream guitar!

I switched to the D'Addario Nickel Bronze strings and the sound is even better than before!!

Best of luck with your J15,
PJ

I think the HP415 is 4" depth and the J15 is 4.5".
I have to research it again, they hide the dimensions for some reason?

The depth is on Gibson's website. They also refer to it as "slim body.". Now we know why the 15 sounded much better. That half inch adds up in tone. Do all of your acoustics have to have a cutaway? Only one of mine does so it gets all the tunes where I need the room, lol.

Look forward to your report on the new J-15.

Sounds like you got a killer deal!

Easy to add the strap button.. 5 min job.

The salesman told me it was the walnut back and sides on the J15 vs. mahogany on the J45.

I would think the Mahogany is the deeper tone, that would explain it

It just arrived at 5:30, Gibson shipping box is wet, but the case inside seems dry.

I am letting it warm up for a couple of hours or so, it is 14 degrees outside and it has been on the UPS truck since 6am.

Open it tomorrow I would think. Too soon and you'll get finish checking according to our gurus here.

I will probably wait until tomorrow.

I did not want to take it out of the box, but the box felt a bit damp/wet and I did not want the case to get ruined. plus the box had a gap open where I could see inside.

If the case would have been wrapped in plastic I would have left it in there.

Dan
I tried to distract myself.
Watched a 76ers game, watched some TV with my wife, went to sleep early.

I woke up at 4:30am, I am going to work for a few hours, by noon I am going to open it up.

5:30am was 12 hours, it should be fine, but I will wait until I am done working.
