Who is, or was, your favorite athlete?
Who is, or was, your all time favorite athlete? I'm talking about hockey, baseball, football, basketball, golf, tennis, etc. Sometimes it's tough to keep it to a single one so feel free to add 2-3 if you need to or break it out by sport.
For me, Wayne Gretzky, although my first favorite athletes were Jim Rice and Guy Lafleur. |

Toss up between Sonny Jurgensen of the Redskins and Bobby Clarke of the Flyers. Honorable mentions to Diron Talbert and Stu Grimson.

Hunter Pence (outfielder for the Giants). He strikes me as a bit of a throwback and I like that.

Back in the day it was Phil Esposito....
Then I moved to the town where Brad Van Pelt grew up and got to know him some and see first hand what a great athlete and person he was. About 10 years later, Elway came on the scene at Denver. To me he was the last true hero who stayed with the same team until the end.

Early in my life, it was Dave Keon, a forward with my beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. In my teens, Russ Jackson, a great QB with the CFL Grey Cup winning Ottawa Rough Riders was also my sports hero, in part because he became my high school principal soon after his career ended (he was a terrific principal/guy, very involved with students). When Wayne Gretzky came along, I admired him a lot and after all these years, I still do.

I didn't arrive in the US until 1984, so my favourites are based on my experience since then - Larry Bird and Joe Montana are the two who spring to mind immediately.

Greg Jones #6/#33 fullback from Beaufort SC (next to Parris Island where I went to boot camp) and played under Bobby Bowden at FSU then drafted in 2004 in the 2nd rd to the Jacksonville Jags up until this past season and now plays for the Texans. He is an unsung hero on many levels both as a person and in the community as well as being a great athlete. I'm not much for celebrity stuff or autographs but I do have his sig. on both my FSU Championship football and my Jags AFC Central Championship football when the Jags were in that division and won back to back titles.
At FSU: rushed for 2,535 yards and 23 touchdowns; 6th all-time.

As a child, my favorite player was Carl Yastrzemski. I was hundreds of miles away at college on the day he played his last game at Fenway Park. Those were the days before the Internet. My mom sent me the special section from The Boston Globe honoring him.
