MW,I absolutely share your taste in beefy necks and the observations you articulate. . My Greenfield G4 neck depth/profile is practically like a pre war National , its a C shape but flattened at bottom, has lots of depth that really supports my hand and makes all chording a breeze...I am also a devotee of wide fingerboards...1 7/8 for me going on 45 years of playing now. The combo of chunky neck & 1 7/8wide fret board (almost flat) are heavenly! Cheerio!

It's all been said - great playing on a great instrument!!

Joel, can you tell us how you recorded? Is that an iMic into an iPad or something like that? Did you add some reverb and a bit of eq, or that a flat recording coming from the guitar?

Phil

There's pure magic in the air when a gifted player is making music on a Jason Kostal guitar. Applause and respect!
Couldn't have said it better.

Thanks guys.

Phil - my recording setup is really basic. It's an Apogee Mic direct into my iMac. Used a bit of eq to balance the sound & a dash of reverb. The guitar sounds so wonderful by itself and has wonderful overtones / 'reverby' sound as already, so I tried not to alter the sound too much.

I've been slowly trying to teach myself how to record, it's a fun process but think I've got a long way to go still!

Joel

Awesome guitar, balanced with a big bass.
Top notch rendition too, Joel - congrats!

Cheers

Michael, I know how much that guitar means to you. What an amazingly generous act to loan it out for a while.

When I grow up I'll have a Kostal guitar from "The Tree".

Spot on. I'm sure others will agree that buying a guitar through TNAG is one of the most exciting / fun / perfect experiences for a guitarist. But Michael really has gone above and beyond here. His guitar is one of those 'holy grail' instruments - the very best materials assembled by an outrageously talented luthier. So I'm honoured to be babysitting it for the next few months.

Certainly makes the wait a little easier

Such a generous gesture by Michael. Also shows Joel is a trustworthy gentleman...

Michael's MD sounds great as always. Good job.

I'm hearing no sustain on the G note played on the low (E) string. The F sounds good, and the A sounds good, but the G goes thump. I find it's hard to get a guitar that sustains well on all notes on the E string. i wonder if this is something inherent in guitar building.

Probably my questionable eq'ing - this thing sustains for days!

Listen to some of Michael's many great recordings on this stunning instrument. Pretty sure you will hear that there is no "thump" on that G note.

I've listened to the recording many times. While the EQing is a matter of taste, I don't think any notes actually ring long enough individually for any of us to comment on sustain.

Besides, sustain on fretted notes depends largely on player technique as well.

Hi Steve. That was me :-)

Glad you liked the Fischer. I've since sorted the action on the 12/15 by adjusting the truss rod as people suggested at Ian's bash - a bit scary for me as it was the first time - and it's settled into a better relief for playing. It has also benefited from being taken out of its case and played a lot for the past two weeks, as it had been hidden away for almost a year in the US. It seems to have come alive :-)

Cheers

Mike
