Just trying to stoke my memory from Healdsburg, I remember thinking the dread was not well suited to my fingerstyle playing. I was just talking to John this morning, and he confirmed that this guitar was meant to be driven hard for rhythm playing and not for fingerstyle. My favorite of the three I played (by far) was the 00-12 which was really present, powerful, and had a wonderful bass response. I believe that guitar had a Euro spruce top and ebony back and sides (and a cool flamed maple neck). The OM was great as well, but I strongly preferred the 00-12 . . . and I'm not usually a 12 fret guy.

I believe the 00-12 was very similar to Jim Magill's, pictured below.

I'd rather go with something totally retro. I've got a good "modern fix" with the Kraut already...

I would love a style 42, like one of these (pictures from John):

Good choice above.... Real classy 42 style! I had an OM from him, no bells and whistles, just a classic Adi/Braz with ivoroid binding.... I regret that I sold it, the guitar matched my style very well.... Also, it had about the best playability possible, so clean and super comfortable.... Exciting!

Yep! That's the one. Great guitar. I think Fretboard Journal picked that guitar as one of the top 5 picks of the show.

A customer of mine spotted that one. I have John building something similar for TAMCO around the end of the year.

Except for the headplate and soundhole design, this guitar is the twin to mine.

John liked the way mine came out so much that he decide to make another with Euro spruce, Macassar ebony and flamed maple neck. The paddle head, cutaway and belly bridge were also updates on the traditional 00 design.

This is a great-sounding guitar.

And I think its older sibling on the right sounds even better.

Three years have elapsed since this message, which means others may have had a chance to play Circa guitars. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Here are some pics of my Circa guitars. I have an OM-28 and a D-28 with sister sets of BRW. I didn't think it was possible for John to build a guitar that equaled the OM (I commissioned it first), but the D is unreal as well.

The more I play, the more I love them. Personality-wise, probably my favorite builder.

My thoughts would be I really want one!

I did a skype lesson with Tony McManus once where he was playing his PRS and broke a string and grabbed the Circa, hearing him fingerpick that thing was what made me decide to thin out my collection to one steel string (ie if you can play it right you don't need one for every genre/ style.) But it's also slightly (edit: totally) triggered GAS in that now I think I just need that steel string to be a Circa!

Another John Slobod fan here. I have played numerous guitars of his at Swannanoa and at Healdsburg and he makes a great guitar and can deliver what you are looking for. I also have really liked the guitars of Bill Tippin, but if I was looking for the traditional vibe, I wouldn't hesitate to go with John and Circa.

Best,
Jayne

Count me as yet another member of the John Slobod Appreciation Society. I nabbed an awesome OM28 (Adi/Braz) last year and it's been my go to guitar ever since. I think it may be the first and only (?) guitar John has built with bar frets. It's definitely got a drier tone. It's hard for me to articulate, but when describing the tone on this guitar, the words authority, and old-world presence, jump to mind. I don't have any really good glamour shots of it, otherwise I would post it.

I love this thing so much, I commissioned another one! Adi / Maple OM. It never ends!
