New Larry Robinson Inlay...impressive!
We just received this inlay work from Larry Robinson, and it's quite nice.
This is for a project that has taken on a life of its own: One day we were joking with Bob Tucker, who thought it would be a hoot to re-top an Ovation classical with a good top, and great care given to the voicing of the instrument. Sort of a 21st century version of Torres' famous experiment with his paper mache guitar, whose point was to prove the supremacy of the top in sound production. Bob couldn't think of a more unlikely sound producer than that plastic bowl. So the jokes continued.... Finally the day came when the project took a serious turn, and we began thinking of possibilities. Top wood... bracing pattern... bridge... rosette......... It seemed that an "Ovation-like" rosette would be in order, so that from a distance the instrument might not readily appear to be hot rodded. And of course the hope would be that people would say "Wow, Ovation classicals sound GREAT". Then Bob could smile and say no, this is no mere factory guitar, and then launch into the importance of the top, etc. So the rosette planning commenced. Ebony ring, with some sort of repetitive pearl pattern seemed in order. Somehow this stirred an M. C. Escher image, which I asked Larry to play with (and see if he could bend into a round format). He did. So here's his take on Escher's print "Metamorphosis". Ebony, silver wire, white MOP, gold lip MOP, and (I think) some black MOP. The hard part for us will be inlaying this into the top while losing nothing of the fine detail. Hope you enjoy looking:  Some closer shots:     Thanks for viewing, Steve

 I know the intent of making this rosette Ovation-like but if i saw this in person i would know this was not a 'regular' Ovation (after i picked up my jaw off the floor). Just stunning execution! I have always admired Larry's inlay work but this .... You WILL post pics of this 'build'!??!?? Ken

Actually, once the inlay arrived my reaction was simply to frame it. Like Fliss said, it's such a fine piece of art it either needs a really fine guitar underneath it, or simply to be hung on the wall. Of course Bob will have the final call, but I'm pulling for a plan "B". Steve

It might be the only visual indication that is not your Glen Campbell's Ovation (i know that was a Balladeer - just could not think of someone who played the classical model).
