I just won a Boss CS-3 compressor on eBay...$52 plus $6 dollars for shipping...$58 total...not bad for a two week old pedal that sells for $99 + tax new.

Congrats on the score! I had the CS3 once but I wanted simpler controls, so I traded it in for an MXR Dynacomp.

OK, you asked if we had any favorites. I do. Four years ago I splurged and bought a Keeley Four-Knob to replace my Boss compressor. Yes, it's expensive, but I've never regretted the purchase and use it almost every time I play electric.

Whatever compressor you get, make sure it has a decent range of controls! I hate the Dyna Comp as it's limited just to squashy country sounds. Personallly I like to have Attack/Release/Ratio controls.

Wampler Ego. If using a compressor with an acoustic, I like to have a blend control to keep things subtle. The Ego is very versatile and sounds great whether I use it with my Tele or my Martin. It's an "always on" pedal for me.

Some people like the Boss, just not for me. It does sound like a good deal - especially if you plan to use it with an electric guitar.

...reading the handful of posts reminds me...
Be sure you read up on the use of compression...and see if you really have to have it.

Well what I'm looking at is the Fishman Platinum Pro EQ, it comes with a simple compressor built in. Only has one knob for control. I have the Venue DI, and decided I wanted compression too...as that is what can make studio magic happen...The Boss CS-3 has 4 control knobs to shape the sound and a foot activation switch, so I feel I'm better off with the Venue/Boss combination than the Fishman Platinum Pro EQ...., I have more tweaking options.......I can also use this compressor with my electric guitar and bass.

I use the Mooer Yellow compressor. Best compressor I've used for acoustic or electric. My second favorite is the Visual Sounds compressor side of the Route 66

Well I've heard my playing and compression sounds just like what the doctor ordered. Limit the loud sounds and amplify the softer notes. Will it help the sound of my playing ?? I think so. Could I add compression after the fact in Sonar X3 ?? Yes but I was always taught the secret to make a great recording is, you have to have a great sound to start out with, and polish from there. I have tried adding compression in Sonar and yes it does help the sound of my playing, so having a compressor in my rig will only help things.

Boss has been making quality foot pedal effects for as long as I can remember...always see them at the music stores....Boss is owned by Roland I believe. Roland makes good stuff.

Two words: Diamond Compressor. You'll thank me later and it's also a TGP favorite with rave reviews.

It's "always on" when I play electric.

I've had the Boss and the Dynacomp and both are fine, but more electric suited to my ear. The one I use for acoustic is the Cmatmods Deluxe Signa Comp. Clean and clear, 4 knob so highly tweakable, just sounds better to me. The other I have heard raves about is the Wampler Ego but I have not tried it personally.

I just listed my bearfoot pale green v3 compressor on ebay... Its been my second favorite pedal after my analogman fuzz for 3 years of playing pedals.. It's a little over your budget but is in another league as far as seamless organic sound, granted the boss will have more compression and may be a good place to start. Compressors are a whole world unto themselves and you sort of have to jump in with both feet...
