Default Playing with friends, a.k.a. Jamming

Most Thursday nights for the last four years I have met with four other women musicians for the purpose of playing music we love and to help one another improve our skills.

Three guitars , three voices and a flute.

Tonight's set list included two originals from our group, (3 & 11) and two tryouts for new material (9 & Slow boat to China - which didn't get noted )

We have so much fun, every time without fail , music makes us happy.

I recommend it for everyone!

Excellent. I enjoy playing alone, but I love playing with others.

Been a regular at an open jam for a few years, and concur, it's recommended!

Gatherings with friends and players for informal interaction with music is ALWAYS a benefit for all involved! I hesitate to use the word "Jam", as I think it's been over-used and most times completely out-of-context...

But there is no denying the power of music and human interaction; that is just the best!

Found a Meetup that was a group jam, every other Sunday afternoon. That was four years ago, and I have missed, I think, three times...it is so much fun, even though we have a setlist, we also get to go around the circle, and play whatever we wish to share. That's the part I like, because it has helped bring me out of my shell, musically. I am always just so delighted, when a song just comes together--often when least expected!

I agree - playing with friends is one of the delights of guitar playing - we have a group that meets to play and learn new things called the 'living room players'

That is so nice that you do that.

I used to have a similar experience every week and then it fell apart due to personalities

"3" is original? Which one of you claims to have written Merrily We Roll Along?

Yes. Musicians with personalities are the most annoying kind ....

Yep, playing with friends is the best fun there is. For the past few years I have spent most every Thursday evening playing with a group of friends. When everyone is present, there are 7 of us. We play out once in a while (either the full group or some subset), but the most fun is playing together, on the deck by the river, under the stars, 'til the wee hours. Some magical moments.

this sounds great ... ; I went to a "jam" a while back that was awful. The leader was a jam buster who showed off ,,, then his friend decided to play Rocky Raccoon ... my personal opinion, a jam-together should have some guide lines, music and lyrics for some, a head's up fro all ... If the player doesn't know what key he/she is playing in, or the time, or ... how can the group know what is happening ..

I used to jam. I think the writing spark put me on another path and the little time I had to spend playing I used for that instead. I still mostly write, which is my way of saying I jam with melodies I'm developing. In the company of others playing covers is a lot of fun. Might attend a new open mic this Wednesday and see what that turns up.
