help me decide on leather strap

Leaning towards the 2nd one, but wanted to ask if anyone has any of there and any comment you might have to help me decide. Also, the user manual on Martin says some leather can damage the gloss finish. Is that a real concern or is that Martin just trying cover themselves?

I have three Levy Leathers suede straps. They are my favorite leather strap and I recommend them very highly. Very well made, very comfortable.

My favorite leather straps are Lakota Leather straps and Martin's. I never store my guitars with straps so never have any sort of problem. I like these straps because the leather is super soft and the rough suede inside keeps the strap from slipping. I prefer softer straps to stiffer and I find the Levy's a bit on the stiff side. Not as stiff as Italia straps but still not as soft as the Lakota's.

I've been thinking about treating myself to a new strap. Right now, I have probably eight or ten of the "Seatbelt" straps along with one of the Fender skinny leather straps, but think a nice, brown or tan leather strap would look pretty killer on my custom 000-15! That Lakota tobacco-colored strap might be just the thing!

I recall reading somewhere that at one time the chemicals used to treat certain types of leather had the tendency to damage some guitar finishes. This occurred when straps were left attached to a guitar or left touching a guitar while in a guitar case. That said, I have had the same leather strap, made from an old dog leash, attached to my mandolin, in its case for several years, with no damage to its nc finish at all.

Some of the more modern finishes commonly used today are said to be more chemically resistant than nc lacquer.

Nevertheless, most people will tell you that any strap, leather or otherwise, should be removed from its guitar when returned to its case.

I like both those straps, and prefer leather only, with no man made fiber or metal buckles. Levy straps have been around and have a strong following. I just purchased a leather strap from Walker and Williams that I like for its plain simplicity.

No experience with Iconic Leathers but I've have used the same Levy's padded leather strap for probably 15 years now and it's still in great condition except that it's all broken in and soft and pliable. Great guitar straps. I've never needed another one.

I don't have the suede model, I have this one in brown/black. I'm surprised how much they've gone up in price. I think I paid around $50 in a store back when I bought mine:

For years, I've made my own straps. I've found leather suitable for blanks at tack shops and shoe shops. The first one I made, I measured the distance between strap button holes and haven't looked back. No buckles, no adjustments, just elegant simplicity.

Rocky, it is true that some leather tanning methods can have a bad chemical reaction when placed on guitars with nitrocellulose lacquer finishes. But none of the leather used by Levy’s Leathers will cause that problem. (What’s even more of a menace are straps with vinyl backings on them - that stuff EATS lacquer finishes...)

I own a bunch of Levy’s straps and really like them, but in the past couple of years I’ve gotten several straps from Walker & Williams, which are the same high quality as the Levy’s straps but still significantly less expensive. I’m writing this on my phone, so it’s not easy to include a link to their website in this post, but do a Google search on Walker & Williams straps. They’re truly superb quality.

When I have some money to burn I plan to have a couple new straps made by Brookwood leather. They are beautiful and should outlive me.

I’ve also got Levys straps and they are fine, but if you want something more exclusive, get this English one (made with Italian leather)

So it costs a bit more, big deal, less than a couple o BC picks and not so easy to lose.
