Default New Mandolin from Wilborn guitars

Check out the new Mandolin video from Wilborn on his Facebook page... He does a great little Jazzy mando demo in the video:

I kind of like the double cutaway in lieu of the scroll. What do you think?

Very pretty non-F5 take on a 2 point mandolin. It sounds very guitar-like, lots of chime, overtones and sustain. It is a pretty sound. I prefer a dryer, crisper tone myself, but I always appreciate it when a luthier does something other than their best imitation of a Gibson. So many of those already.

beautiful tonewoods and the top hole shapes are different but visually pleasing.
I like the dark neck and binding for contrast. tonal quality sounds very good and more oval hole than F hole. interesting bridge.

there's a couple of builders in mandolins who make a similar 2 point modern style, Steve Sorenson comes to mind immediately:

I never cared for the look of the 2 point. We have a guy in our town who makes them as well (actually he calls them 3 points, b/c he adds that F style point) :

But that Wilborn sounds great! Was that Jay playing it too? Seems unfair for one guy to have all that talent! ;-)

I'd take it and I don't even play a mandolin. Sure is purty.

That's Ben Wilborn the builder. He really is a great player. I jammed with him for about an hour at the Woodstock show. Apparently he's known in the classical world for his violin playing talent but he's obviously gifted on guitar and mandolin, too.

and i do like the double cutaway vs scroll with this build.
going to PM Ben to see what one of these might cost, i'm a mando nut these days and this one has a tone that would definitely deliver in many of the things i like to play.
