Question Bad Nut.....

I got a new Asheville mandolin for Christmas. When I tune it standard the G, A, and E strings go sharp when fretted. But when I put a capo at the 1st fret and tune it standard everything plays in-tune and the strings aren't hard to fret and plays like butter. Is this a sign of bad nut slots?
