Default NGD: Collings x 2!

So... ignorance is bliss apparently. I've been playing Yamaha Dreadnoughts for years and I enjoyed them. They played pretty well, sound fine, no issues. Until I realized what an acoustic could sound like.

I've been talking to a friend about putting a new band together that does all acoustic rock, r&b, whatever is fun. I decided I'd look around at guitars. I've been watching reviews for a while and had Collings on my list of guitars to play.

I'm in the upstate NY area, about 1 hr from NYC, so I decided to go to Mandolin Bros. on Staten Island. I studied their website and inventory before going so I had an idea of what I wanted to try. My friend and I had been there 20 years ago and he played a 12 fret slotted head Martin that he never had forgotten so one of those was high on the list.

When we got there we played most of their collection of Collings. First on the list was a new DS2HA. That changed things for me. What a huge tone! Big piano like tone. Great clarity. The guitar sounded like it was a highly produced (in a good way) with some reverb on it... yet it was live and right in front of me. We played it next to the similar model Martin and it was no contest. Collings all the way. The only negative I could come up with on the guitar was that it wasn't as comfortable for me to play as a 14 fret dreadnought.

I didn't buy anything that day. I went home and did more research. I wanted to see what was available here and on TGP.

On here I found a D2HA Varnish that had been sold to Redwood Acoustics. After talking to the previous owner of the guitar, Mike, and the owner of Redwood, Tom... I took the plunge.

The guitar came this week. It sounds great. Very balanced tone along with all the other qualities I loved with the other Collings I played. Amazing build quality. Great note separation. It didn't have the low end of the ds2ha, but an overall great guitar.

Then, I got an email from someone on TGP about a post I put up looking for a DS2HA. They had a DS2HG (german spruce) for sale at a good price. So, what's better than 1 Collings? -- Two!

The DS2HG arrived today and it sounded great, just like the one at Mandolin Brothers, but it has the 1 3/4 nut and was more comfortable to play.

So, I'm in Collings bliss. I'm very happy with the guitars I have and plan to have for a lifetime. I'm a lucky guy.

Wow! Way to take the Collings plunge! I am still on Collings #1, a D2HG, which seems to be the blend of your two. It's a mighty fine guitar.

Ah ! 'tis true !
Way back in '98 I was looking fr a wide neck 12 fret, and ambled into a now sadly defunct guitar shop in London. Nothing there but the excellent sales guy took a note of what I wanted and called me back some-time later - tld me to come up son with everything I could bear to trade.

He has assembled the following : an HD28vS, a Santa Cruz D12 and the second DS2h to come into the UK - I bought the Ds2h, and have since bought...well a number of Collings guitars.

You have been warned !

If I ever spring for another really expensive (for me anyway) guitar, it will most likely be a Collings. Amazing instruments. Congrats.
