I thought I was a Gibson connoisseur, but stand corrected. I just found out the new bubinga J-100's are laminate! And prone to peel up! I won't be in the market for that any lifetime soon. I did have a maple and it was out of sight, and I am pretty sure it was solid. The GAD guilds, owned one, won't be going back there either. It was staunchly mediocre, shade better than a lam. EJ epi. The washburns are Ok if you can get one in the 400 range. Tacoma makes a great jumbo. Good luck.

Check this one out:

It goes for about xxxx.- Euros. I have had one in my hands - very nice and even better then the Gibson.

Epiphone has an EJ-300 version with a solid top for about 100 more than the EJ-200. They can be found on e bay and look and sound great.

Default j200

Check out Turner guitars in England they do a nice j200 style jumbo. But I suppose it's all down to how much you want to spend. I recently sold my Gibson j200 to a guy in Vienna for big bucks

Well, keep your shirt on, Cozy! No need to ditch that connoisseur status just yet, on account of mis-information.

The J-100 has never been built using laminated bubinga wood. Sounds like someone's got their facts wrong.

I don't have one, but I think the bubinga variant on the 17" jumbo is indeed a nice one.

Cheers
Fred

Thanks, Fred,
I haven't seen it in person, but a friend has one and tells me the layers of the back are peeling away at the edge. I love gibsons for the good ones and what they are, but they are known to quietly capitalize on a cost saving measure in my experience and beg for forgiveness later. I need to get some pictures of his damage. I will get back with what I find out. Y'all take Care!

Seagull , Yamaha and sometimes Epiphone -most epi's are hit and miss but their around 3xx , so if you find a good one -you have a bargain ! I like the newer Gibsons as a whole- i just think their way over priced and theirs better sounding guitars for alot less money out their .

Epiphone Elitist, just as good as the Gibson counterpart, and better in many cases.

Played a J-45 copy that was as good if not better than most all Gibson's I've played.

Pretty rare though.

I love mine.

I've been looking for a good J200 clone. This one does seem nice http://www.mydepotusa.com/en/ebay-st...LID-WOOD/33011

I can't remember how close it was in tone to a Gibson, but it sure was nice!

EDIT:

I just did a quick search and the J58SW is on clearance at Musicians Friend right now.
