I have to confess that I'm a little bit disappointed with my Taylor 810. It's a 2000 model.
First, I played my friends DN3 (2008 model) which is by far less expensive, and it sounded louder and was more comfortable to play. Second, my 810 is developing some kind of air bubbles inside the finish ( in the rosewood) which look awful !!! What I have in mind is to sell my 810 for $1000 (because of the horrible bubbles) and buy another used Taylor (GA4, DN4) or maybe a used Larrivee.. a newer model .. maybe experiment with other guitar shapes. Do you think it would be a good move, to sell a more expensive old model to get a less expensive newer one (with no air bubbles)? Does newer Taylors are suppose to sound louder than the older ones? Thanks, Yamil ![]() |

Are you the original owner of the 2000 810? If so, I'd contact Taylor about the finish problems before doing anything else.

Do you have any photos of the air bubbles inside the finish?

I don't know about louder, but Taylor did revoice their dreadnoughts a few years ago, and they have a good bit more bass, and a fuller sound than they used to. I have really enjoyed 90% of the Taylor dreads that I have played that have been models around 2006 and higher. I don't which year the revoicing took place.

Taylor revoiced their Dreads sometime in 2003.
If you are the original owner, and nothing detromental was done to cause the bubble effect, Taylor will resolve your Finish issue.

Do your finish air bubbles have whitish dots or streaks under them? I'm wondering if any portion of your guitar may have gotten partially immersed in water for a short period of time in the past? I've had that occur to my c. 1985 Takamine SJ-15E ("Ry Cooder" model) that got wet during Cyclone Val in Samoa back in 1991. It wasn't long before some whitish-looking streaks appeared beneath the finish along a portion of the back-and-sides interface that had experienced 1/2" of water immersion with the guitar standing upright in its case. The guitar's finish marring was a result of water getting through the finish and into the wood and then drying-up, resulting in fine finish bubbling and white streaks in the immersion area. The hardshell case seam that had gotten soaked did come apart but the guitar was fine except for the finish marring which remained. If your bubbles occurred in the finish with normal care and usage, probably Taylor would fix the finish under warranty. Regards, SpruceTop

Before I would dump an 810 for air bubbles I would try and keep it for a travel and beach guitar. There is a great 810 custom being advertised in the classified section for a low price.

it's weird.. my local dealer doesn't bring in many dreads at all..
for the last year perhaps, it's always been the GA, GS shaped guitars.. no market for the dreads here I suppose.. Maybe it doesn't help that martin is set up a few doors down.. heh
