Knobloch Actives Carbon are my overall favorite G string. Strings by Mail sells individual strings for $4. A similar sound, but narrower diameter and less expensive per string is Seaguar Premium Fluorocarbon 80 lb test fishing leader.
But you have to spring for at least a 25 yard spool to get it.
I'm a big fan of the Knoblochs as well. I liked the trebles in Aquila Rubinos too, though I remember them breaking frequently.
