I'm thinking of purchasing an electric bass guitar, and was wondering if anyone has suggestions or advice on what to look for in shopping for one. I'm willing to go up to the $400 range to start...four string...just want to use it for home recording and enjoyment...

Would an Epiphone Viola bass be a good one to start with? I've always liked the McCartney-type of look, but I can't make myself buy anything with the name Rogue on it, and I don't have enough cash to get a Hofner....

What, as a newcomer to basses, should I watch out for?
