Thanks everyone who has chipped in with advice and tips. I had some time today to look at the setup and I think mrmatt had the answer.

In the input window of the track I had followed all the instructions in the Reaper manual and from the posts here. It then occurred to me that maybe the problem was that although the track was receiving the MIDI information it may not have been passing it on to the plugin.

Opening the input dropdown I could see that the last option under input:MIDI is "map input to channel" - and of course the default is set to send the info back to the source. Changing this to the MIDI channel of the plugin solved the issue immediately!
