Open mics with a stage band are not the set up at every open mic.

I have a few songs that are loads of fun when I can have an insta-band. Early on I made a mistake of asking the house band to let me run solo; that's not what the beer-drinking (money spending) customers came to hear.

There are exceptions but not many.

Coffee shops often run open mics that draw a more attentive audience and don't have the room or need for big amplifier setups.

Keep looking around and as you meet other musicians of like spirit and skill, consider hosting an acoustic jam for three or four folks.
