i always bring a backup guitar.
i almost never break strings - like maybe 4 or 5 times in over 40 years. but in 1994, i brought a backup guitar to a show, and lo and behold, a string did break. my buddy was there acting as my tech, and he handed me the other guitar as soon as it was feasible, and most people didn't even realize a string had broken.
