Practice.
Learn as many jazz, bluegrass, ragtime, country blues standards that you can, inside and out.
Alcohol and other intoxicants should be nowhere near practice time. It's ok to indulge a bit during jams, but practice time is business hours.
Buy the best guitar you can afford from the beginning, and make the necessary sacrifices you can in order to get it. It's hard to find inspiration in a cheap guitar that isn't enjoyable to play.
