Okay - Newtones sounds like my new best friend! Do stores carry them or are they found online?
Funny someone mentioned DR Sunbeams - I had this exact problem with my Warwick Rockbass (string tension too high) and the DR Sunbeams turned out to be the "perfect" string for that Bass!
