You need to know how dense the material which the nut is made of - Stew Mac supplies bright white bone nuts which look similar.
As for the nut and what to do, seems like you're making too big a deal over nothing. If the nut isn't seated right, simply remove, clean slot and re-attach -- this is probably quicker to do than writing a reply or taking it up with Epiphone. Or demanding a new guitar. If nut is made of poor quality material, simply change with a good bone nut, they cost about $5 give or take.
Not sure what more you are looking for from a cheap second hand imported guitar.. These are fine for the price but if you want it to play like a pro you'll have to make some alterations.
