Best advice in the entire thread IMHO. I started with The Loar VS220. After 6 months I had the opportunity to snag a used Collings MT2. And I couldn't understand the price difference at all for many more months. I almost sold it, but fortunately I didn't and I totally get it now. Part of the problem is that the newbie tends to treat it like a small guitar, and you can get out of the blocks fast with that mentality. But you won't make it to the next level that way. The mandolin requires rethinking picking technique quite a bit. And it takes a while to realize that. At least it did with me.
