You are not the only one who struggles with barre chords. The style of music that I enjoy adds the thumb over the top of the neck to create bass notes in concert with the partial barre chords. I can do that style with more ease. Some of the short or partial barre chords leave my finger looking it's an egg cutter (or whatever the name of that kitchen utensil is) at times.
If I was taking lessons to learn classical guitar, I believe my knuckles would get slapped and there would be a lecture on proper technique, but thank goodness, someone else plays Bach on the guitar.
