I just acquired an old 70s vintage 12 string, and put it next to other 6 string guitars. It looks like it has thinner body than the 6 stringed guitars. They are all dread shape, but definitely the 12 string is thinner by about 1 to 2 inch in the distance between top and back.

I wonder if this is the part of the reason for their treble emphasied jangling unique tone. Because I just put 6 strings on it, and played it as 6 string, and it has totally different tone from usual 6 string guitar - still treble strong and jangling. - Different , crystal clear and very nice tone though. I like it.
