I've also heard of a few folks that keep both a high g and low g string. They keep the length long enough so they can take them off and on again multiple times. I've never done it myself so not sure how well that works. I have both a high and low g uke to solve the problem though I don't have big money in either (around 400 dollars each). I do tend to play the high g much more often but folks at our uke club will play low g almost exclusively too.
