I can't argue with you there, Steve, I rarely need to use the Lower notes, but I also don't use the gut thumping volume because I only ever play in Church, so I am usually fairly sedate anyway. The weight of the 5 String might be an issue if you are playing long sets in an entertainment situation, in a Church, the longest you ever play without a break is usually only about 20 minutes or so anyway.
