This song was a big hit here in 1974 reaching No2 in the 'pop' charts including over the Xmas period (No 6 at Xmas) and has remained very popular indeed hence all of the audience singing along with it. He made many appearances on TV as well singing this.

Interesting about this song becoming a hit in 1974 in the UK. I don't think I knew that. So this explains a lot about why so many people can sing along on the chorus with Ralph McTell -- that whole scene of people totally absorbed in this song and singing along, it's so amazing to watch! I think it really does show that music reaches some place inside us in a way that breaks down barriers. We might all be fighting about politics, but bring us all together for a song like this, and then everyone who dives in to sing can experience this same transcendent moment.
